West Charlotte football player, Garinger coach on the move

West Charlotte junior tailback Josh Covington has transferred to Providence Day, Chargers coach Bruce Hardin told the Observer.

Covington, a 5-foot-10, 190-pound junior, is expected to compete for a starting job with senior Peyton Landrum and sophomore Greg Goff, Hardin said.
Hardin said Covington’s family had applied to Providence Day two years ago, but the school was full.

“It’s a pretty good situation to have (three good running back candidates),” Hardin said. “At least we’ve got one for the next couple of years. And Josh has a lot to offer. He’s just learning our system and he’s come in and had a good strong work ethic. We enjoy having him here.

Dwight Miller will join his third school in three months, at least technically, when he starts at Marvin Ridge in Union County, where he will coach the girls basketball team.

Miller coached the Mallard Creek boys team last season and was hired in the summer to coach and teach at Garinger High. At Marvin Ridge, he’ll rejoin Mavericks athletics director Tony Guylitto and boys basketball coach Gosnell White. Guylitto and White formerly worked at West Charlotte, where Miller was a longtime assistant to White on the Lions boys basketball team.

Marvin Ridge’s girls team was 8-16 a year ago, Guylitto said.
