Tuesday's prep highlights

Myers Park, the reigning N.C. 4A champion in girls’ tennis, opened the season with a 5-4 victory against Charlotte Catholic on Tuesday.

The Mustangs, 18-0 last season, got singles victories from Grace Baker, Anna Rickenbaker, Jessica Perez and Debolina Banerjee. Baker and Perez combined to win in doubles, which clinched it for Myers Park.

Banerjee’s win at No. 6 singles was a two-hour match, and gave Myers Park a 4-2 lead after the singles matches.

Charlotte Catholic (0-1) had singles victories by Megan Laframboise and Lucia Leahy, who also combined to win in doubles. Kelly Tomlin and Mary Kathryn Ferebee won a doubles match for the Cougars, who were 18-3 last season and reached the third round of the 3A playoffs.

Volleyball

North Mecklenburg improved to 3-0 with a 25-23, 19-25, 25-12, 25-16 victory against Myers Park in a nonconference battle between two of Charlotte’s best teams.

Last season, North Mecklenburg reached the 4A quarterfinals, and Myers Park was a 4A semifinalist.


Cross Country

Myers Park dominated a six-team meet at Wingate.

The Mustangs, led by Patrick Sidlovsky’s winning time of 17 minutes, 48.5 seconds, had the top nine finishers in the boys’ race. Sidlovsky was followed by teammates Jack Matkins, Robert Terry, Alex Smith, Jansen Coulter, Parth Shah, Jeff Prouty, Hunter Powell and Andrew Hall.

Myers Park’s Becca DeLoache won the girls’ race in 20:32.7, followed by teammate Emily Zizzi (20:54.4) as the Mustangs won the team title. Weddington’s Haley Kapheim was third, and teammate Chelsea Matson fourth.

Boys’ Soccer
Charlotte Christian’s Stephen Gilbert, John Humphries and Clay Johnson scored a goal apiece in a 3-0 home victory against United Faith Christian. Jeffrey Yoh and Humphries each had an assist.

-- Kyle Searles scored two goals to spark Butler’s 3-0 victory against Monroe Sun Valley. The Bulldogs (2-0-1) also had a goal by Eric Roman, assists by Morgan Boyle, Robby Beatty and Ryan McIntyre, and eight saves by goalkeeper Zach Hensel.

-- Kevin Scott scored three goals in Hickory Grove Christian’s 3-2 victory at Gaston Christian.
