S. Meck names state champ basketball coach

Former South Mecklenburg High state basketball champion John Fitch will coach the Sabres next season, athletics director Kevin Hinson said.

Fitch played for the Sabres from 1976-78. The 1976 team beat McDowell 74-61 at the Greensboro Coliseum to win the N.C. 4A championship. Fitch played for Bobby Cremins at Appalachian State from 1978-82.
Fitch, who won’t teach at school, is married with three children and has been with the New York Life Insurance company for 27 years.

Anyone who has been in Charlotte knows that John Fitch might be one of Charlotte's best athletes as well as one of the classiest guys in town. He and his entire family are truly great people. Good luck to John....South could not have picked a better man to lead that program.

He was a former assistant coach with the program, right? There are SO MANY quality assistant coaches in this area. It's a shame, more aren't given opportunities when head coaching roles come available. Particularly in the private school system.
