Rowan County wins berth in American Legion World Series

Rowan County Post 342 won the Southeast Regional Tournament with a 3-2 victory against Tuscaloosa, Ala. in Sumter, S.C. to earn a berth in the American Legion World Series.

The World Series will begin Friday in Fargo, N.D., and Rowan (37-8) is scheduled to play Festus, Mo. (Central Plains Regional champion).

Billy Veal (6-0) earned the victory against Tuscaloosa with 5 1/3 innings of scorless relief pitching. He allowed one hit. Rowan County scored the winning run when Phillip Miclat scored on a bases-loaded balk in the bottom of the eighth.

Rowan County erased a 2-0 deficit with two runs in the fourth. Trey Holmes had an RBI-double, and scored on Zach Smith's single.

Rowan County last won a regional championship in 1996.
