Flag retirement ceremony part of Vance football opener

Vance High plays its home opener against Indian Trail Sun Valley on Sept. 11. The school will celebrate "Football Night in the Governor's Village" during the game.

Part of the night's activities will include the retirement of the U.S. flag that has flown in the school's football stadium for 12 years.

An Honor Guard from the 23rd Naval Mobile Construction Brigade (the “Seabees”) will conduct the ceremony, which will be followed the presentation of a new flag, which flew previously over one of the U.S. military bases in Iraq. This ceremony will begin at 6:30 p.m. in the Vance stadium Sept. 11.

That is great. I would venture to guess most people do not know how to retire a flag. Good for them!
