Best football teams in Carolinas: Byrnes & Butler?

Butler head coach Mike Newsome talks with some of his players before a practice last summer. (Staff file photo)

MaxPreps has released its preseason top 25 poll. Duncan Byrnes (SC) is No. 2. Butler is listed among "the last five teams left out."

No other Carolinas teams are ranked.

Byrnes is no surprise. The Rebels have several nationally ranked players on the roster, including running back Marcus Lattimore, who was MaxPrep's national junior player of the year last season.

Not sure what's in the water down in Duncan, a town of 2,870 people about 76 miles from Charlotte and 15 miles from Greenville. But the tiny town keeps putting out great football teams and talent.

MaxPreps figures that Butler, despite losing twice to rival Independence last season, is going to be a little better than the Patriots this season. Butler will have plenty of talent back and perhaps the best team in school history, something we seem to be saying about Butler about every other year now.

The talent is deep in Matthews and maybe this is year Butler breaks out and reaches a state championship.

I guess I wasn't really watching Indy and Butler last Novemeber when I saw Indy paste them 49-7. And now they won't have Hawatha Bell, Mccutcheon, Tuppins, others. Butler will lose big to Richmond, possibly to Mt. Tabor. Indy will dominate the Bulldogs. But, sure enough, we'll hear the Butler is the best mantra next year. They sure have a great sports info. dept.

Watch out for Charlotte Christian. Absolutely loaded on defense with speed at linebacker and secondary.

These large recruiting services cannot possibly follow teams from around the nation. Butler is looked at only because their qb is getting looked at. Anyone really think Newsome will beat Knotts? Indy puts up 40 on Butler every time they play.

When will the fools who run the CMS sports dept. finally allow public-private games? Indy-Christian would bring a huge crowd to Memorial.

Go Rebels! It would be great to see a Byrnes vs. Indy / Butler / etc. matchup.

When the old Byrnes coach took over he went to all the football little leagues around Duncan and got them all to use his playbook and call all the teams "Rebels". The pipeline was formed. By the time the kids get to high school, they have been running the offense for years. And of course, success leads to parents moving their kids to the school district to have a chance to play there.

Yep - we never heard about Byrnes when they beat Independence when Independence was such a powerhouse on the winning streak. little 3a brynes beat them up and down the field

Forget Byrnes, Butler and Independence. The number 1 school in the area is the Gaffney High Indians. The school has 16 4-A SC state championship! Only 45 minutes from Charlotte, and none of the cup cake schools in the Queen City will play them. Now that's a dynasty.

Indy scrimmaged Byrnes 7 times up to this year, winning four.

Last year's 4A and 4AA tell us that at this time, much like the majority of the 80s and 90s, the best HS football in NC is being played in the Fayetteville area.

Historically, no NC team can match the sustained success of the Shelby Golden Lions. NO ONE!!!!

Byrnes and Indy scrimmages have always been great matchups. Byrnes has never beaten Indy "up and down the field".

Byrnes largest margin of victory over Indy was last year, 31-14. Indy beat them by a wider margin in 2003. Byrnes won in 2005 24-14 in one half at Gardner Webb for its first victory. Byrnes other "win" over Indy was by a td in 2007 when Rod Chisholm fumbled after gaining a first down on the Byrnes 14 yard line with less than three minutes to play. I use "win" because it was a scrimmage.

Byrnes is a 4A school and has not been 3A since the 1990's. The school has slighlty over 2000 students now and pulls from several small towns in Spartanburg County.

CMS should be commended for not letting its schools play against Christian and Latin. If those kids want to play against Butler and Indy, they can go to their home school and play them. If you want to go to private school, then you should play against private schools

INDEPENDENCE COACHING STAFF AND TEAM = CHEATS. IMO.

Karma will catch up to you Indy. Mark my words..

Atleast Butler has built a winning program the right way by not cheating the system.

Greg,,,you don't know much,,,Butler has done everything INDY has done except win any state championships,,they've got kids over there that are suppose to be at other schools,,just look at the girls BB team, softball, they just don't have a coach that can call offensive plays,,if they don't win this year,,,they will never win a state title, anybody that has 6 D1 players and can't win the conference,,

Well Butler until you win one then maybe thing's will be different.I came out of West Charlotte back in the mid-90's when coach KNOTT'S was still there ruling all of charlotte. The only problem he had was he could not win the big one. That was his only problem until he finally got his first state title with West Charlotte in "95", and then moved onto indy were he won his next 6 or 7 state title's.

Richmond is the standard for North Carolina football, Indy, Shelby, and West Charlotte are all strong programs. Butler is strong also, but until they stop getting owned by Knotts you cant say they are the best NC has to offer. I actually see E Meck beating Butler this year also...

WE (Richmond Raiders) use to own Tom Knotts when he coached West Charlotte. He got so sick of it, he left and went to Independence and started letting new talent from the other schools congregate at Independence legit or not a in order to find a system (illegal IMO) to defeat little Richmond High School in Rockingham, N.C. What's funny is he left to be a great college coach ( HA,HA!) and his replacement took over, went undefeated and he too won a state championship. Tom Knotts you truly suck and found a way to cheat the system.WHY, WE MUST HAVE A POPULATION (and it is a dwindling one for the last 10 years)of 60,000 people total. Well, we got tired of his crap and whipped Butler, West Charlotte and Independence(at their home)IN dominating and a destructive fashion and got our state championship back and our quarterback is back, too and we will kick their A_ _ again! You can take it to the bank. Richmond does theirs the right way Knotts! Go back to Duke. They don't need you anymore!

Who is Richmond County?? The entire county goes to one school probably from k-12. Good grief, I am so tired of people not giving credit where credit is due. Richmond County beat Indy last year because Knotts continued to call the same plays, his mistake, but you can not take away the success that Knotts has had in coaching. He is a beast and he has the championships to show it!!! Every year it is the same old hate and accusations, yet the Observer comes out each year and says that Butler has the team to beat!!! Wow!!! It is what it is....experience is everything!

Anonymous said...

INDY will beat Butler again this year and then they will beat that sorry ass Richmond County and win yet another championship. Richmond just be happy you got lucky last year and won because it wont happen AGAIN!! Former Indy alum Kip P!!!!

Ok anyone who said that Charlotte Christian would be a good match up against any public school is crazy. They are not and have not been a good team. But the Public-Private games should be allowed in some cases. There are some really good Private school teams that get little respect because they have to play poor opponents and way out of city games.

When did Richmond beat Butler? Guess another poster writing about things he knows nothing about. Loss of linemen and not being prepared (in the RC game) cost Indy last season.

2004 Indy was loaded. The best team to ever play in NC. Go down the players that played and look at what they went onto do in college especially as freshmen. Tells the story.

Let me react to this. First, Butler has had its share of ineligible players (football, softball, basketball) and that is without the door to door investigation Indy got....Funny that Richmond has players from surrounding counties every year who just happen to move there. Good players want to play for good programs, don't blame the schools if the families lie...Lastly, Richmond deserved the win last year but remember, Indy lost four of its' best players due to injury, transfer, death in the family, and paperwork. No one, especially Butler, will ever win 7 titles in a row again.

Shelby scrimmaged Byrnes last year and was behind 35-0 after a half. They refused to come out the second half. Indy and Byrnes were tied at the half. Totally different football in 4a and 2a.

Anonymous said...

Indy got inside of rc's 10 yard line 6 times last year but only scored three times. They got more yards that RC. RC capitalized and deserved to win but that was Not domination.

Some people are saying Christian because they had a good year last year and got a state championship with asterisk. Some of the Charlotte private schools do play local public schools. Case in point, Country Day has been Catholic, Northwestern and Crest over the past couple years.

Richmond had no trouble with Independence at all. When did knotts ever beat RICHMOND AT West Charlotte? You think players transferred from Laurinburg and wadesboro to flock and play for the raiders? You people don't know didly squat about RICHMOND. Why there must be 15,000 people in both of those counties combined. Independence had them transferring in good numbers from a population of at least 500,000 plus. And some from out of state. Knotts was a joke. a puppet politician who owned the politicians in Meck. county and got away with infractions that would have sunk other schools outside of Charlotte. Who is richmond county? you stupid butt that gave your name. They are the same school that won 3 State championships in a row and would have won 4 but were robbed at Garner by the hometown official. They own 7 state championships they won without the assistance of "50 plus more schools" who lost their best players to watch them play for knotts. Richmond is the one that kicked every school in Mecklinburg county for decades until knotts found support for his master plan at Independence. HIS RECORD is tarnished and won by allowed crookedness.

To those that think the best private school teams can beat the best public school teams in Mecklenburg county, you are smoking crack. No way any private school even competes with Indy, Butler, East Meck or West Charlotte.

To the person that said Butler can't win the conference, Butler did win the conference in 07.

To the person that said Butler won't get by East Meck this year, why is this year any different than every other year that Butler beats East Meck? I dont think East has won that matchup in the last 8 years. And in 07 East went 0-13.

Indy is the standard bearer for NC football. Even Shelby and Richmond cannot boast the accomplishment of what Indy accomplished.

Butler will be very good this year. As usual. They still have to get by Indy. But to the person that said Mount Taber will destroy Butler, BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Butler was in on a three way tie for the conferene in 2007.....after Knotts was suspended the night before the game because Butler wouldn't protect his team from overzealous jv fans and he lost his temper. The rematch? Indy pummeled Butler, only allowing 3 first downs! East beat Butler in 2007 and was ahead late in 2008. Butler cannot go all the way with their current coaches. Knotts will outcoach Mewsome every time. He is 11-0 against newsome.

Langston we just ask that you be objective. You are always tooting Butler's horn. Do they have you in their pocket. Let's be serious, Independence has quality players that are returning this year. What about Butler? Give Independence its just due. Butler is not the better team and for you to not even mention them in your article tells the story.

Anonymous said...

Protect him?? The guy was 30 yards away behind a 15-foot high fence!
In '07 Butler won the conference outright, as they beat Indy head-to-head and East lost that game after the forfeited their entire season.

I can solve this whole argument, send the best team in NC to play the best team in Florida. After the pummeling everyone will be quiet. Texas had their best team play Miami Northwestern in Dallas. They got owned. Indy scheduled a 1A school in Florida and acted like they were going to play a powerhouse. Byrnes did schedule and destroy a small 2A school in Florida. But start scheduling Northwestern, St Thomas, Lakeland, and Booker T. After we get mollywhopped about 5 or six times the argument will be over. The 04 Independence team was the best to come out of NC. However, each year teams in Florida field 10-15 D1 players. Northwestern sent 7 to Miami, Lakeland sent 7 to Florida. And thats not including where the other d1 signees went. We play pretty good ball in NC, but we are not ready for the big boys yet, lets just be happy that we field some good talented teams, and work to improve the quality across the board. Knotts is probably the best coach in the nation whether you like him or not, if he had the talent of some of the Florida and Texas schools he would have gone undefeated his whole career...

There was never a 3 way tie in the Southwest 4a conf in 07. Butler ended the season with 1 loss and the head to head victory over Independence. East Meck lost to Independence and South Meck ending with 1 loss. South Meck and East Meck both had to forfit the entire seasons. In the first scenarion with no forfits, Butler is Champs. In the second scenario with both forfits, Butler is the Champ.

Tommy Knotts was disquilified from coaching do to his behaviour at the Butler Indy JV game where Butler won, with Knotts calling the plays from the sidelines. Geiller, who had coached the team in 04 to an undefeated state championship was in charge during the loss to Butler.

By the way, East Meck has a banner in the gym that declares them as Conf Champions in 07. In reality and in every record book not only did they actually NOT win the championship, they did not win a single game. Again, East Meck has not beaten Butler in at least 8 years. Check the records on ncpreps.rivals.com.

Go ahead Butler and claim a title based on forfeits. Before any forfeits, Butler and Indy tied due to both having one loss (Indy's was with Knotts at home). After South forfeited, it became a three way tie. Only 8 months later, after East was determined to have watched film on Sunday, was Butler given a title. Not a classy way to claim a title, particularly when Butler had two safeties (both play college ball) who lived in Garinger's district! None of this matters, with Knotts back on the field Butler got owned in the playoffs, just as they did in 2008 Indy will destroy Butler again in 2009.

Christian could definitely go toe to toe with Indy or Butler this year. They got 4 kids gettin offered by BCS schools and another 4 or 5 that will go small D-1. Compare those recruits to the same ones at Indy/Butler. If you want to see a preview of a would be fantastic Christian-Indy then go see them play each other 7 on 7 this summer.

Anonymous said...

Is Christian going to play a schedule of home school teams this year or ratchet up the schedule to what Country Day does? What kind of speed did Christian have on the track team? Speed kills.

Anonymous said...

Nobody will play Christian in-state so they have to play 8-4Augusta Christian (Georgia), 9-1 Liberty Christian (Virginia), and defending 1A champions Jupiter Christian (Florida) who are riding a 27 game winning streak. Christian tried to schedule Catholic but Jim Oddo wont agree for some odd reason.
Christian has half of dozen kids who run 4.6s or better.
