Recap: Southwestern 4A baseball tournament (first round)

PROVIDENCE 6, INDEPENDENCE 0
Richie Shaffer improved to 6-0 by throwing a one-hitter as the top seed Panthers, No. 2 in the Observer Sweet 16, improved to 21-4.
Providence's Mike Dunn was 2-for-2, Matt Lee hit a home run and C.A. Clayton had a triple. Independence, the eighth seed, finished 9-13.

BUTLER 7, WEDDINGTON 6
Ben Berkey hit a grand slam to tie the game at 6, and the Bulldogs squeezed in the winning run in the sixth inning. Butler's Tyler Tewell hit a home run, and picked up a save. Weddington's Brad Collins was 3-for-3, including a home run.

ARDREY KELL 3, EAST MECKLENBURG 0
Alex Wood pitched one-hitter with nine strikeouts and hit a two-run home run for the second seed Knights. Wood's home run came against losing pitcher Olen Little, who pitched well by limiting Ardrey Kell to four hits.

MYERS PARK 5, SOUTH MECKLENBURG 2
The Mustangs had a four-run second inning, fueled by home runs by Joe Hager and Harrison Henney. Winning pitcher Austin Campbell improved to 5-1.

The semifinals will be at Myers Park on Monday.
Ardrey Kell will play Myers Park at 5 p.m., followed by the Providence-Butler game.
The championship game will be at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, also at Myers Park.
