Providence wins fifth straight 4A golf regional event

There's a golf dynasty brewing in western, N.C., and it belongs to the Providence Panthers.

Led by medalist Zack Munroe, Providence won a fifth straight N.C. 4A Western Regional championship by 10 strokes Monday at the Brushy Mountain Golf Club in Monroe.

Now the Panthers will try to win Mecklenburg County's first team championship since 1996 -- when Providence won.

Providence’s 293 team total Monday was easily higher than second place Alexander Central (303) and Myers Park (306). Those three teams will advance to next week’s N.C. 4A state final at Pinehurst No. 4.

The three highest individuals not on those teams also qualified for the state finals. Those golfers were South Caldwell’s Nick Austin, who shot 73 and tied for second place with Providence’s Ryan Vince. Morganton Freedom’s Mitchell McGlamery (76) and East Burke’s Brandon Kastelic (77) won the final two individual spots.

Kastelic won a two hole playoff for the final berth, stopping East Gaston’s Chris Carver and Butler’s Charlie Kiser.

Myers Park had three golfers in the top ten: Quen Mather, who shot 75, and Jack Cottrill and Tyler Wise, who both shot 76.

At the N.C. 4A Midwest regional at the Meadowland Golf Club in Winston-Salem, North Mecklenburg qualified for next week’s state finals by tying Greensboro Grimsley for second place with 299 points behind winner Winston-Salem Reynolds (297).
Hopewell (304) was fourth. The top three teams advance to next week’s championship in Pinehurst.
Mount Tabor’s Isaac Spencer was medalist. Hopewell’s Logan Harrell shot a 71 and finished fourth along with teammate David Hall. Both players qualified for next week’s state finals as individuals.
Spencer beat Winston-Salem Reynolds Will Dull and Kane Wilkerson in a playoff. All three golfers shot 69.

Misenheimer’s Gray Stone Day finished second the N.C. 1A Midwest Regional, power by medalist Erik Benson, who shot a 72 at Norwood’s Piney Point Golf Course. Bishop McGuinness shot a 302 to edge Gray Stone by one shot. North Stokes shot 305 and was the final team advancing to the state finals. Individual qualifers were Payton Park of Monroe Central (74), Seth Covington of East Surry (74) and Ross Burgess of Elkin (75).

North Lincoln’s Miller Capps fired a 2-under-par 69 at the Warrior Golf Club in China Grove Monday to win the N.C. 2A Midwest regional championship.
North Lincoln also placed three golfers in the top 10 overall to win the team title with 307 points. Salisbury (313) was second and Lenoir Hibriten (322) was third. Those three teams will advance to next week’s N.C. 2A state final at the Long Leaf Golf and Country Club in PInehurst.
West Davidson’s Justin Clement shot 70 to finish second. Maiden’s Josh Morgan shot 72 to finish third. Both golfers qualified as individuals to next week’s state final along with Morgan Patton’s Bradley Reep who shot 77 and finished in a tie for seventh.
Joining North Lincoln’s Capps in the top 10 were teammates Zach Lawing (76, sixth) and Russ Piercy (78, 9th).
