Lake Norman's golf team gets another shot at glory

The Lake Norman boys’ golf team just wanted a chance. The Wildcats, who missed qualifying for states by one stroke a year ago, will get their shot at a 3A state championship at Keith Hills Country Club in Buies Creek.

Lake Norman, who won their third consecutive North Piedmont conference title last week, advanced to the 3A state championship firing a team score of 312 to finish second in the 3A Midwest Regional at the Challenger Golf Club in Graham (NC).

“Last year’s disappointment has been a constant reminder, I made sure of that,” Lake Norman golf coach Scott Sarvis said. “We didn’t want to be sitting on the sideline watching again.”

Sarvis, who has been a coach and teacher at Lake Norman and Mooresville for 30 years, is in his final year before retiring. Five seniors join Sarvis in getting their final shot at a state title before graduation.

“I think everyone feels the sense of urgency, that is our last chance for most of us,” Sarvis said.

The Wildcats are led by senior Travis Taylor, who shot a team-leading 74 in the Midwest Regional as well classmates Micah Moffett, Joey Noone, Donnie Besecker and Jack Steeb. Norm Krise is the team’s lone junior in the top six.

Taylor, Moffett, Noone, Besecker and Krise were all-conference, and every player on the team has the ability to shoot in the mid 70s.

“Every player on our team can go low,” Sarvis said. “We feel like if we play our best, that we will have as good a chance as any team to win it all.”
