Kings Mountain’s Ramey Kearns scored both goals in the Mountaineers 2-1 N.C. 3A quarterfinal win at Charlotte Catholic Friday.
Kings Mountain (22-1) will play either Marvin Ridge or Hickory Ridge at home in next week’s N.C. 3A state semifinal. Kings Mountain has never played in the state championship round.
Friday night, Kearns scored to give her team and Catholic’s Peyton Laurie tied the before halftime. With 20 minutes to play, however, Kearns scored again when a teammate crossed the ball in her direction. The ball bounced off the ground and Kearns knocked it in, scoring on a half-volley into the corner of the net.
Catholic had several chances to tie, but couldn’t make anything.
“We just couldn’t put it away,” said Cougars coach Gary Hoilett, who returns 16 players and four starters next season. “Kings Mountain played a good game and they were committed to everything. Take nothing away from the effort they left out there.”
