Charlotte Christian baseball coach Greg Simmons notched his 400th victory Saturday in a 12-1 victory against Hickory Grove.
“It was a lot of fun, and after the game they gave me a big ceremony and a cake,” said Simmons, 43, in his 17th season as head coach (and 19th overall).
Simmons is 400-167-1, and built Charlotte Christian into a private-school power. His team won the 3A title last season and is 19-3 and a strong contender this spring.
Simmons said his thoughts drifted Saturday to milestone victories 100, 200 and 300, and his first teams at Christian.
“I thought about the kids who’ve come through the program and set the foundation,” he said. “That first team won 10 games and the second team won eight, but they gave a lot.”
Simmons said he didn’t dwell on the midseason milestone.
“No. 400 doesn’t mean anything unless you win that last one,” he sais. “That’s why we didn’t make a big deal of it to the players. It just means you’re getting old and have been around a long time.”
