Butler track star shines at Penn Relays

Butler High senior Aslynn Halvorson won the girls' discus title at the prestigious Penn Relays in Philadelphia this weekend.

Her throw of 161 feet, 8 inches was was 13 feet better than runner-up Candicea Bernard of Jamaica.

Halvorson's throw shattered her personal best by nearly four feet (it was 157-3), and was 14 inches from the all-time N.C. best in the event (162-10 by Harding's Kamorean Hayes in 2005).

Halvorson, the Observer Girls' Track Field Events Athlete of the Year last spring, signed with Tennessee last month. She was the N.C. 4A champion in discus and shot put last spring.
