Tennis ignores cold with sizzling opener

Temperatures in the 30s Tuesday didn't wipe out all the spring sports.

Charlotte Latin beat Marvin Ridge 5-4 in the chilly boys' tennis opener at Charlotte Latin.

The Hawks got singles victories from Baris Aldanmaz, Michael Tomlin and Charlie Shaffner, and doubles victories from Aldanmaz/Kristian Perks and Fitz Powers/Tomlin.

"We had a great match that lasted over two and a half hours and finished under the lights," Latin coach C.W. Stacks said. "Despite the cold, several players shed their sweats, played in shorts and came off the courts dripping with sweat. It was unfortunate that two solid teams from top to bottom had to play each other so early in the season and under such conditions but the spectators, and there were many and they stayed until the end, were treated to outstanding tennis along with wonderful sportsmanship by both teams."

Andrew Treske, Joey Hatala and Christian Smith won singles matches for Marvin Ridge, and Smith/Brett Ward won in doubles.
