Prep swimming foursome sets national record

Four area high school swimmers combined to set a national record in the 18-and-under boys’ 800-yard freestyle relay at the Southern Zone Eastern Sectional meet in Cary.

The record time of 6 minutes, 34.84 seconds qualified the foursome – Thomas Santoli and J.T. Stilley (North Mecklenburg High), Ben Correll (Providence) and Mack Montgomery (Concord Cannon) – for the World Championship Trials in Indianapolis in July.

The swimmers are on the Charlotte-based SwimMAC team.

Santoli is the top-ranked 200 freestyler in the country (in 18-and-under), Montgomery is third and Correll is fourth. Santoli represented the U.S. on the National Junior Team at an international meet in Guam in January.

Correll and Montgomery will represent the U.S. on the National Junior Team at an international meet in Vancouver, B.C. in May.
