W. Charlotte rallies reaches second straight regional final

We'll have updates throughout the night on the Butler-Mallard Creek and West Charlotte-East Meck regional doubleheader.

West Charlotte East Meck: Despite shooting 18 percent in the first half and not much better in the third quarter, the Lions, down by as many as 11, rallied with defense. East went more than six minutes with only two points.

Danaira Erwin-Spencer made a layup to trim West Charlotte's lead to 42-41, but Trena Moore Smith hit a runner with 40 seconds left and Nikki Burton's steal and layup gave the Lions a 46-41 lead and a second straight N.c. 4A West Regional berth

Butler 58, Mallard Creek 41: In the third quarter, Mallard Creek ran off five straight points to tie the regional semi at 32, and the Mavericks fans got up, the Mavericks bench got up. Butler got up again, too.

The Bulldogs ran off 20 straight points over the next 7 minutes, 34 seconds. Mallard Creek didn't score and missed 16 straight shots. By the time Mallard Creek's Umeka Benson made a layup, with 3:49 to play, Butler was up 52-34 and thinking about tonight's 8 p.m. regional championship against either East Meck or West Charlotte.
