Lake Norman off to hot soccer start

Lake Norman girls' soccer is 4-0 this year and ranked No. 2 in 3A in the state. The Wildcats beat rival Statesville 1-0 last week after beating Hopewell (4-1) and West Iredell (10-0) in the season's opening week.

Freshman Taylor Waters, whose family moved from Winston-Salem last summer, has been a pleasant surprise so far, leading the offense with three goals, including two scores against Hopewell. Senior Meghan Kos has led a defense that has allowed only one goal.

“We haven't really had the opportunity to play up to the level we're capable of playing for an extended period of time,” Lake Norman coach Jon Mertes said. “But we will find out very quickly where we are as a team.”

Lake Norman, which has outscored opponents 24-1, also has a big week coming up with a home game versus Mooresville Wednesday before playing in the Fort Mill Invitational Tournament next weekend.

Lake Norman senior midfielder Sarah Tang will play in the Clash of the Carolinas all-star game July 11 at Blackbaud Stadium in Mount Pleasant, S.C. Tang, who will play college soccer at Francis Marion next year, was an all-North Piedmont Conference and all-region performer as a junior last season.
