Gatorade names N.C. and S.C. girls' players of year

Asia Williams, a senior guard at Durham Hillside High, was named Gatorade N.C. Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

The award is based on athletics, academics and character.

Williams averages 21.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 3.2 steals. She has helped Hillside (26-5) reach the N.C. 4A championship game Saturday against West Charlotte. She was named Most Valuable Player at the 4A Eastern Regional last week.

Williams, who has signed with Wake Forest, has a 4.55 grade point average, and is No. 5 in her class. She sings in the church choir, has volunteered at various school events, works as a peer tutor and on behalf of the local Ronald McDonald House serving sick children and their families.

■ Lower Richland senior forward Morgan Stroman is a repeat pick as the Gatorade S.C. Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year.

She led the Diamond Hornets (26-1) to a fourth straight state championship, and averaged 16.1 points, 9.1 rebounds, 3.8 steals and 2.6 blocks.

Stroman, named a McDonald’s All-American, has a 3.69 grade point average. She has served in the school’s student government and on the alcohol and drug prevention advisory board, volunteered as a youth basketball instructor and on behalf of the Families Helping Families charitable organization.
