Forestview goes 0-2 in state title quest

RALEIGH -- In its quest for its first state championship in any sport, Gastonia Forestview went 0-for-2 Saturday in basketball title games at Reynolds Coliseum.

Hours after the school's girls' basketball team lost the 3A championship to Greensboro Dudley, Northern Guilford ended the school's boys' basketball team's dream of a state title.

Northern Guilford, in just its second season of existence and with no seniors, held off a fourth-quarter rally by Forestview and claimed the N.C. 3A state title with a 66-54 victory over the Jaguars.

Six-foot-six forward Chris McClain was nearly unstoppable for the Nighthawks (30-3), scoring 23 points and he missed only one shot all evening.

Preston Holmes led Forestview (25-7) with 17 points. -- Jim Utter
