Around the Prep Diamonds...

Top baseball and softball performers:


■Myers Park’s Chris Overman retired the first 14 batters in a 12-2 win against Hopewell. He struck out 11 in five innings, and allowed two hits.

■ Kannapolis Brown shortstop/pitcher John Tuttle was 5-for-7 with two home runs and two doubles in two games this week. He also picked up a save by retiring the last three batters in a 6-5 victory against Sun Valley.

Dylan West’s three-run walkoff home run gave Mooresville a 7-6 victory against West Rowan. The Blue Devils have five home runs in three games – Aaron Meadows (two), Billy Nantz, Jake Beaver and West.

■Charlotte Catholic pitcher Danny Vliet is 2-0, and has complete-game victories against Charlotte Latin and South Mecklenburg. He’s also hitting .300 with seven RBIs.

■Central Cabarrus senior Dalton Shuford pitched a two-hitter with 15 strikeouts, and hit a three-run home run, in a 5-1 victory against North Meckenburg.
Coach Jim Knight called it "the best single-game performance of any player I've coached in 11 years as a head coach."


■ West Iredell’s Hannah Pennell struck out 19 in a 1-0 victory against Newton-Conover. She walked one, and allowed two hits.

■ East Rowan’s Chelsea White struck out 15 and didn’t walk a batter in a 5-0 victory against West Iredell.

■Providence’s Leah Quant is 2-0, with 20 strikeouts and two walks in wins against North Mecklenburg and Hopewell. She’s batting .714, with two doubles and three RBIs. Outfielder Erin Quant, her sister, is hitting .667.

■East Rutherford's Laura Hopper struck out 20 in eight innings in a 3-2 loss against Hickory St. Stephens.
