Rock Hill wins S.C. wrestling title

Rock Hill High won the S.C. 4A dual-team wrestling championship in dramatic fashion Saturday.

The Bearcats beat Fort Dorchester 28-24 when Chase Ballard won the last of the day's 14 matches.

Ballard, a 145-pounder, defeated Ashley Brakelin 11-4, after falling behind 4-1 in the first period. The three-point decision preserved Rock Hill's 25-24 lead heading into Ballard's match.

It was Rock Hill's 16th wrestling state title, and first since 2000.

"I was a big underdog," Ballard told the Rock Hill Herald. "He was supposed to win and I don't think anyone in here besides me and my teammates expected me to win. I've worked hard, probably harder than him. I wanted it. It was mine."

"It's the greatest feeling I've ever had, but I've never been so nervous in my life. I've never got a state championship medal or ring, but I will now. It's so great to be a part of this."

Rock Hill finished 33-2, and Fort Dorchester was 25-2.

It should be noted that Rock Hill allowed students who were caught with marijuana the week before the State Championship wrestle.

We need to hold athletes accountable for their actions.

Anonymous I do not know where you got your information but you are incorrect. The wrestlers that were caught with marijuana were caught after the State Championship. In fact they were not allowed to wrestle in the upper state this past weekend for individual positions. They were held accountable for their actions. Rock Hill High School has excellent coaches and they would not allow this to happen.

I don't think it is anybody business but the staff at rock hill. People always hate a winner.Remember people these are just kids 14 to 18 years old.

To the person who posted the "we need to hold athletes accountable for the actions," mind your own business. Let Rock Hill take care of Rock Hill and you take care of whatever it is you do, instead of worrying about what we do. Maybe if you were worried more about what you do, you could raise up to the level of the team that you are so desperately trying to tear down. Our athletes are held accountable and will always be handled in such a fashion. And as far as any disciplinary actions we take, their none of your business, period!
