Providence: swimming dynasty

Providence High won its 10th girls' 4A swimming state championship in 12 years Saturday at N.C. State.

The Panthers have won five titles in the past six years.

Providence's boys were runner-up (by three points) to North Meckleburg in the 4A meet.

The boys' most valuable performer award went to Providence's Ben Correll, who won the 200 freestyle (1:44.94) and the 500 freestyle (4:33.38), with both times meeting the automatic All-American standard.

Providence sophomore Kip Darmody set the 4A state record in the 100 backstroke (49.29 seconds) and was third in the 200 individual medley.

Providence's girls recorded 221 points to 177 for runner-up Raleigh Leesville Road.
