Myers Park High names baseball coach

John Spencer was named baseball coach at Myers Park High on Wednesday.

Spencer, 29, a 1998 Independence High graduate, most recently worked at On Deck, a year-round baseball facility in Charlotte. He is a marketing teacher at Myers Park and became the sixth baseball coach in the school's 57-year history.

Spencer replaced Bobby Simmons, who resigned to enter the principal’s intern program. Simmons coached for three years, and directed the Mustangs (20-7) to the playoffs last spring.

Spencer was a four-year starter at catcher at Wingate (and All-American in 2003), and played professionally in the Frontier League for two years. In the offseason, he coached high school baseball in Missouri.

“We feel extremely fortunate to find a young talent like John to head our program," said Greg Clewis, Myers Park's athletics director. "He is a young man of high integrity and energy. We are excited about the potential of the program and look forward to watching John’s leadership style and passion for the game.”
