Gatorade names N.C. boys' soccer player of the year

Ben Newnam of East Forsyth High was named Gatorade N.C. boys' soccer player of the year Thursday.

The award is based on athletic excellence, academics and character.

Newnam, a senior midfielder had 25 goals and 26 assists this season, leading the Eagles (16-5-1) to the N.C. 4A semifinals. A two-time National Soccer Coaches Association of America All-American selection and an ESPN RISE Second Team All-American honoree, Newnam is a two-time Metro 4A Player of the Year and a two-time Region 7 Player of the Year. A member of the U.S. Youth Soccer Region III Olympic Development Program team, Newnam finished his career with 57 goals and 63 assists.

Newnam graduated from high school in December with a 3.85 GPA and is currently enrolled at Wake Forest University. A former East Forsyth High student government representative, he volunteered at a local assisted-living center, as a fundraiser to benefit cancer research and on behalf of the Twin City Youth Soccer Association.
