Cary beats Butler in 4A wrestling final

Butler went as far as any high school wrestling team in Mecklenburg County history, but lost to host Cary 43-18 in the N.C. 4A dual-team final on Saturday.

The Bulldogs (21-4) were the second Mecklenburg team to reach the championship, since the state adopted a dual-team format in 1990. Independence also lost in the final to Cary in 1998. Both Independence and Butler were coached by Billy Puckett.

Butler finished 21-4.

The Bulldogs rallied with victories Friday against Northwest Guilford and Concord Robinson to reach the final against Cary, which was in its ninth straight state title match. Cary (36-0) won its third straight state championship.

Butler rallied to beat Concord Robinson 40-34 in the semifinal Friday in the final two weight classes, when Ranson Lee and Austin Long pinned their opponents.

Butler's other top wrestlers are Tom Puckett, Nate Charest and Dalton Cunningham.

Great job by Cary. Why is the East so much better than the west in wrestling? No Charlotte team has ever won....

Why can't we get a better write up on a team that is in the state championships? I would like to know how the matches went.
