Independence to play South Pointe

Independence High will play nationally ranked Rock Hill South Pointe in a high school football game Sept. 4 in Rock Hill.

South Pointe, the 2008 Sweet 16 champion, won the S.C. 4A Division II state championship under coach Bobby Carroll last season.

Independence, which has won seven of the past nine state championships in North Carolina's highest classification, lost to Richmond Senior in the state semifinals.

Patriots athletics director Kelly Lewis said the teams signed a two-year agreement and will play in Charlotte in 2010. The Patriots will also play ME-CA 7 4A power Mallard Creek next season on Aug. 21. That is another two-year agreement.

Independence's other non-conference games are against Hopewell (Aug. 28), Vance (Sept. 11) and West Charlotte (Sept. 18).
