Knee injury ends season for Sun Valley star

Indian Trail Sun Valley High receiver Vincent “Ray Ray” Davis, who committed to North Carolina, will miss the rest of the season because of a torn knee ligament.

Davis, a senior who had five touchdown catches in four games, was injured in the first quarter of a 34-31 loss to Kannapolis Brown on Friday. He will have surgery to repair an anterior cruciate ligament on Oct. 17, Sun Valley coach Scott Stein said.

“It is devastating for him,” Stein said. “He was looking forward to having a great senior year. He’d gotten his body into great shape, and took the pressure off by committing early. As a coach, we don’t make our game plans around one player. We’ll keep going, continue preparing and try to make him proud.”

Davis, 5-foot-11 and 190 pounds, caught 76 passes for 1,134 yards and 13 touchdowns as a junior. He was all-state as a sophomore.

Scout.com ranks Davis 75th nationally among high school receivers.

the stupidity of high school football coaches continues. every year they are responsible for devastating and life changing injuries such as happened to Ray Ray. blown knees and repeated head concussions are continuing to rise because these so called coaches with little or no athletic or sports injury training are put into the position of a coach just because they played the sport in high school. these are the same fools that tell their players not to drink water during workouts because it will make you feel sick. demand more from a coach, have him accept parental and student athlete input or move them out

Only a complete moron would post that the coach is responsible for a torn ACL or a concussion. Football is a full contact sport. Injuries come with game.

Davis if fortunate he already committed to UNC. My nephew had a knee injury his second game of his senior year prior to committing. The schools recruiting him saw him as damaged goods and the offers dissappeared. He has since walked on at Div 1AA and is doing very well. Good luck to Davis.

That has to be the DUMBEST remark I've ever heard. My son tore his ACL his senior year & he had the best strength & conditioning coach around. If you do the percentage of kids that get hurt like that, it has to be low. It just seems to happen to good players. Good Luck to Ray Ray & look forward to seeing you @ UNC.

The head coach was responsible for Ray-Ray's knee injury? Stein plays in the games also?

Ray's injury has nothing to do with coach stein. he is one of the better coaches in the state. he turned sun valley around from only winning a couple games a season to being one of the top schools in the area. you cannot put the blame of an injury of a player on the coach, GO SPARTANS!!!

He should have dropped the Ray Ray kiddie name after kindergarten and just called himself Ray that is unless his first and middle name was Ray but even then he should have been called the more manly Ray only. Calling him Ray Ray is as silly as blaming the coach.
