N.C. champ Randolph off to Legion regional

Randolph County won its first American Legion N.C. baseball championship since 1978 with a 7-4 victory against Cherryville on Saturday at Sims Legion Park in Gastonia.

Outfielder Ethan Marsh was named the tournament Most Valuable Player.

Randolph County (40-12) advanced to the Legion Southeast Regional, which will begin Thursday at Keeter Stadium on Shelby High’s campus. The double-elimination tournament includes eight state champions, and will continue through Monday.

In the first round, Randolph County will play Leesburg (the Georgia champion) at 5 p.m. Thursday.

Cherryville, the N.C. champion last year, finished 43-8.
