Top stories of prep football season

My top six stories of the high school football season:

1. Independence’s 109-game winning streak snapped.
It had national attention, a huge crowd and it went into overtime before the Patriots lost 41-34 to Cincinnati Elder on Sept. 1. The Patriots hadn’t lost since 2000.

2. Eligibility issues.
Independence had seven players benched because of improper addresses. West Charlotte had one player sidelined, and then its athletics director, coach and an assistant coach suspended. South Mecklenburg’s first playoff berth in 14 years was wiped out, and it had to forfeit all its games.

3. No championship for Independence
The Patriots’ string of seven state titles ended with a 28-17 loss to New Bern, in a game Independence led 14-0. The seven straight championships is a state record.

4. Ardrey Kell
The second-year Knights went 8-5, and two rounds into the N.C. 4A playoffs. Coach Marty Woolbright’s squad jumped to a 4-0 start, and won its playoff opener 31-4 at Roxboro Person.

5. Indy coach Tom Knotts suspended
Knotts was suspended two games - the regular-season finale against Butler and the first playoff - after an altercation with a player’s father following a junior varsity game.

6. Goose poop at Garinger
The Wildcats’ home game against North Mecklenburg on Sept. 14 had to be moved because a flock of geese had dirtied the field. Two weeks later, Garinger returned (the geese had been shooed away) and hosted Hopewell.

Tell me your top stories! Post the ones I've missed in the comments section.

Hopefully next year, Indy won't consume 4 of your top 6 "highlights" in a season of HS football. And none of their 4 highlights was positive in nature. Of course, one of them will be that Tommy Knotts won't be back for 2008. watch.

Its so sad that people have so much hate in their hearts for Independence. People cannot stand to see others do well. It really is a shame. Charlotte should embrace the Patriots. Instead, almost every blog commenter has something negative to say.

So geese poop beats out Charlotte Latin's first undefeated season in 20 years, and their third straight state championship, huh? What do the private schools have to do to get some respect? They are banned from playing c-meck schools, and the list of public schools beaten by the 4 CISAA schools is fairly impressive this year. What else can they do?

Latin wouldn't have made it past the 1st round of the 4aa playoffs, stop begging for respect, you play cream puff teams. You want to play c-meck schools? Go to a c-meck school and play real competition! Let's see how well your golden boy qb does in the acc.

If you had watched any of Latin's games you would realize that they are the real deal. They pounded South Point. They have the best coaching staff in the state. The QB will definetly help the Tarheels. I guess we won't know who would win Latin vs. CMS because CMS will not play private schools. Chicken!

I have to admit, Latin is a darn good team. I saw them play Catholic last year and couldn't believe the talent they had. Catholic's defense is about as good as it gets, but Latin went right through it a la the Pats vs. Steelers game the other night. They would've done very well in the public playoffs.

You have to have Butler finally getting that monkey off their back and beating the lil i.

honestly, real football fans don't care about Latin. Sorry, when the best teams in the state are discussed, you are not in the conversation, until you join a conference like Catholic. the meca6 has 3 teams that would handle your pretty boys! Gobble, Gobble!

How can you say play in a team like Catholics conference Catholic makes it to the state championship and Latin drops 44 on them earlier in the season. Nobody understands the public school coaching in most areas is a joke with how many athletes you see warming up for teams like WC and INDY and then when they play it looks like a bunch of chickens running around with their heads cut off. It's rediculous.

Yea, poor Indy, my heart bleeds. Everyone needs to embrace Indy like everyone needs to embrace Barry Bonds. Both are "winners" for the same reasons **********

"until you join a conference like Catholic. the meca6 has 3 teams that would handle your pretty boys"

Thats is the dumbest quote ever. Latin crushed catholic and they went to the 3a finals. Latin beat South Point so bad there coach almost cried. They were another playoff team that went deep in the 3a. Get you facts straight. Only teams latin shouldn't hang with on paper are indy, wc, and butler and I'm not totally convinced we couldn't. We'll never know, but there is one thing I know. latin is the only undefeated team with a ring on its finger in charlotte. How's your crow taste?

You Latin fans thin skinned. The fact that you can get sooooo defensive on this blog is hilarious. Trust me, if your were in a CMS conference, you would not go undefeated. You do not have the depth of athletes. No Crow eating here. Just keep begging for your respect.

We don't need to beg and not thin skinned. We have three state championships in a row and an undefeated season. Just get your facts straight before you bring that weak sauce. Your argument is based on opinion. Mine is on fact. Case closed.

Latin do you really believe that you would beat Indy, WC or Butler? I don't respect your "ring" because you do not play the same type schedule week in and week out!! Plus you only play 1 or 2 games in the playoffs!? Try playing 4 games just to get to the playoffs...

Latin was good and the QB is talented. I would like to see latin play in the public league.

However they would have to follow the same restrictions catholic follows, no transfers without sitting out a year, no recruiting and grant an aids.

I think if they followed these rules and won then people would listen and take notice. Until then your just Latin

This is funny. latin has haters. No recruiting??? I really don't think many CMS scholls want to get in that conversation do they? We don't need you to respect our ring, because we have nine more and a sweet sixteen on the way with a coach of the year to boot. I can alraedy hear your crying. Atleast our coach didn't punch a fan. haha.

If you want to see some real high school football, go to Florida, Texas, or California.

Latin isn't a top story because no one cares about your program and you play a cream puff schedule. Your defense couldn't stop CMS players like Darius Thomas or Rod Chisholm. Nor could you throw on D1 prospects like Robert Blanton, (Butler's other DB), Makiri Pugh or Dovante Hollaman. Cliff M. covers high school football all year knows the prime time football players and schools and gave Latin no respect. Boo hoo......
