The Playoffs: One Man's View of the West

OK, I'm looking at the NCHSAA football playoffs -- Western side.

The 4AA bracket is very, very competitive. Let's break it down.

Independence, fresh off Friday's upset against Butler, goes to Greensboro Page, its first road playoff game since November 2000. I pick Independence to win and for Butler to beat Lumberton, setting up an Indy-Butler rematch in round two.

In the next bracket, I think Scotland will get a tough game from West Meck but win and East Burke will handle North Meck.

Next, Hopewell will provide the big first round upset, taking down Greensboro Grimsley on the road. West Charlotte will beat Providence.

Next, I'm picking East Meck over Davie County and Richmond Senior over West Forsyth.

In Round 2, I like Indy over Butler (assuming Tom Knotts is back as coach) and Scotland over East Burke. I like West Charlotte over Hopewell and Richmond to edge East Meck in a single digit game.

In Round 3, West Charlotte beats Richmond in front of 20,000 at Memorial Stadium on Friday night. On Saturday night, Independence beats Scotland County at Memorial in front of just as many.

In the semifinals, Independence stops West Charlotte for the second time this year to advance to an 8th straight state final. The game will sell out Memorial Stadium.

If Knotts doesn't return, I'd pick the Lions over Butler in the semifinals at Memorial.

In the 4A bracket, I'd watch out for South Meck. I can see them making their best playoff run since reaching the '93 state semifinals. I can see a Crest-South semifinal in the west side.

In 3AA, I like the Catholic-Kannapolis second round matchup. Wow, that's a doozie early. And it'll be in K-Town this time. I will pick Catholic to win and go to Hickory -- which will beat Sun Valley in another doozie of a second round game. Hickory will ultimately go to the state finals.

In 3A, I see Carver and Anson Senior getting to the regional final.

What do you think?

Not sure how they figure out these seedings but I like Butler as the #2 seed out of the West, but Indy the #10 seed and on the road, wow! I'm a Butler fan and look for and forward to another 2nd Round barn-burner on Nov. 16th, but I'm shocked at Indy's seeding. If you thought last night's game was huge, wait for Nov. 16th! Go Dawgs!!

This is the most bizzare bracket I've ever seen. I disagree w/ the Indy over Butler. It's not that Indy can't beat Butler, but Butler knows now that they can beat Indy, and they have that same athleticism Indy has plus they'll have that homefield advantage. East Burke will surprise alot of people. They have a big, strong, physical, and experienced o-line. They run a prolific offense with a punishing running game. Their offense also does an excellent job confusing opposing defenses w/ their fakes, misdirection, and execution of the option.

Hopewell got screwed!! i actually rather see indy as a 9 and hopewell as a 10 so we dont have conference championship remaches with indy butler and WC and hopewell in the 2nd round. but thats only me cause WC beat the crap out of Hopewell the first time and i want to see hopewell actually have a chance.

With or without Tommy Knotts, Independence still has a great chance. They still only lost one game in the 4AA season and were seeded at #10? It doesn't make sense to me. It will just make them play harder than ever!! GO BIG I PATRIOTS!!!!!

By looking at the brackets this year I saw that Hopewell probally has the toughest road to get in the state championship. They will have to play Grimsly who usally is very good, then if they win they will have to have a rematch against the only team they lost to the entire season, then they will have to probally go against Richmond Sr. which they lost to last year first round in the playoffs then if they get by them then they will have to go up against Indy. or Butler, and if then then they will hasve to face Garner in states. I am rooting for Hopewell and wish all the best luck for them.

Let's also remember that the parent acted inappropriately when confronting Knotts. Unfortunately, as a teacher, we are faced with disrespect from parents too often. Yes, Knotts should have just walked away, but the parent is at fault, too. Our society needs to have more respect for teachers and coaches who love their children!!

indy aint great.
all they got is a running game, and when u gotta QB thats 5ft u aint goin anywhere. indy is overrated, they dont have anybody.

oh yeah south meck for 4a state. deffinately our best team in awhile we wouldve beaten butler but were cheated by the time judge
no hard feelings though but yeah watch out for us.
SOUTH MECK YOU KNOW!

What do Hopewell want? To still play cupcake teams, this is what you call playoffs only the best survive. Just because you had an easy schdule during regular season, doesn't mean you will have easy schdule during playoff. The non-conference teams, you played are not in the playoffs. Quit crying and play some FOOTBALL. I think Hopewell is overrated and be seeded #12 in stead of #9. Good luck to Greensboro Grimsley, but DUD-C will bring home the State.

ok your a little too over confident that the DUB-C will go and take states, let me remind you that they got beat by Indy. and barley got by Butler. Oh and that they play in the same confrence as Hopewell and all those other "cupcake" teams so really i think round two will be not as much as a blow out as you think.

hey big-red..shut ur little numb nuts up..all I was saying is that with a 9-1 record a 9th seed stinks. Did i mention 1 time about how hard and unfair the playoffs were. NO.i can tell you are from west charlotte just because of how dumb you are...i was trying to complement you guys saying we didnt want to play you again.

BIG-RED said...

No you are the nump nut. I graduated from THE Charlotte Catholic High School in 1988. Now close your month numb nuts. I call what I see, not what I want to see like Hopewell wants it to be. Go COUGARS and the one and only DUD-C. WC can beat anybody in the STATE. DUD-C did not play a cupcake schdule like HOPELESS did, and should have beaten the big-i with Darius Thomas 507 passing yard. I guess your numb nuts didn't know that. Keep your mouth shut until Hopewell can win something without crying. I see Hopewell is not use of winning and don't know how a playoff bracket is broken down. Win your conference and you will be seeded higher. Ever team that is seeded higher than Hopewell won their conference. Always crying about something. Like I said early just play some FOOTBALL. I know both of my teams are going to do good in the playoff CCHS and DUD-C.

Wow you are actually from Cathloic, then you would know that they had a weaker sched. than Hopewell this year. First off they play the alot of private school teams which never have alot of competition and Hopewell had a much better game against Myers Park than Catholic did so really Hopewell is a much better team than you think.

Anonymous said...

Thank you. and no one was crying actually i was hoping hopewell had a lower seed. But WC plays the same people in the conference. Myers park was supposed to be good. Providence made the playoffs. Its not Hopewells fault they play easy teams. the only reason d tom has that many yards is bc he throws 200 times a game ( dont get me wrong he is a great qb though)

Anonymous said...

thank you for not being so arragant about WC they are a good team dont get me wrong but seriously Hopewell is decent as well and had beaten some teams they had never beaten before until this year so dont always count some one out because they play weak teams.

CAN YOU STOP THAT RED MACHINE said...

Hopewell "First off they play the alot of private school teams which never have alot of competition" Thats what South Point said before they played the "overrated" Latin team that won 42-20, and CCDS beat Crest 17-0. Also don't play the "we did better then you in this game" card, cause the only way to prove it is on the field plus wow MP only had one whole touchdown more on us, which was last second, then you...think

Hey Big-Red, you complain how us at Hopewell are always whining and crying, well look at you always whining and crying. Shows how mature you are by trashing a bunch of 16,17, and 18 year olds. Stop worrying about a bunch of hight school kids and get a life. Oh and are you sure you didn't graduate from West Charlotte, because you are having some major spelling and grammer problems.

To everyone who responde to my comment, first of all Catholic is a 3A school who plays 4A,3A, and private schools teams. We can BRAG, because we have won many State Titles in football, scoccer and other sports. If Catholic ever play Hopewell in football you would cry really bad. Yes you have control of who you play for non-conference games, if you don't beleive me go ask Coach Rust. You had been playing Butler , East Meck, and South Meck for the past years, in stead Coach Rust put sorry Garinger, East Gaston, and Phillip O. Berry on the schdule. Then you barely beat Vance and North Meck which are in your conference. WC beat everybody in conference with no problems. So stop hating WC and CCHS because you cannot hang with neither schools. I think WC have already shown you one time and if you barely get by Greensboro Grimsley, then you will continue to cry about playing WC. Like I always say , just put your pads on and play some real talent football. Because to much sweets are not good for you "cupcakes".

BIG-RED said...

Yes I did graduated from Catholic in 88'.If someone goes to WC don't mean they cannot perform good in school, I guess you are the dumb a--. Beside I have children in this sorry CMS school system and I am a proud 38 years old man who mother send to a good private school, go CCHS and WC. Like I know how old who is commiting on this BLOG freedom of speech It is 11:00 pm and if you are 15,16,17 on this blog at time go to bad. Go CCHS and WC

the only thing that really matters is that Mount Pleasant will win the state 2AA championship!

Hopedale has no room to talk about anyones schedule.
Everyone on their schedule has a losing record with a combined 36-85 win loss record.

They played one team with a winning record and of course they lost. Great year for them but they have to play real teams in the playoffs. Good luck

Catholic better not look past East Rowan, they're dangerous. A Catholic-A.L. Brown matchup would be awesome, though. Think the advantage goes to the Wonders this time around with the home field/crowd and experience of Efird at QB, who threw for over 300+ yards in last year's game vs Catholic and coming off a 200+ yd, 3 TD game vs a tough Concord team last week. They're passing attack along with a solid running game will make them a tough out.

WE at Hopewell are going to be the biggest underdogs in the playoffs and that is final... we have the potential to go all the way and take states. BIG-RED learn how to spell then come talk to me and black and gold thank you for pointing out.

Anonymous said...

I guess this closes the book on Hopewell. They really got screwed as they had to play someone with a winning record again! That twice in one year... It is not fair to Hopewell to schedule games against teams that actually win games.... can't they make exceptions in the playoffs

yeah ok we got beat but do u even know how hard we even played seriously i am sick of reading this crap about us. Even if we win one game yall still say that we suck, omg we worked our butts off from winter to fall and we feel that accomplished something that no one at our school has ever done before.
