Should Indy have dropped in Sweet 16?

Should Independence have dropped from No. 1 in the Observer Sweet 16 poll?

I’ve had a range of responses.

No, some say, the Patriots remain the best team in our area. Their rationale? Losing to an Ohio team shouldn’t carry as much weight as a loss to an N.C. team.

Yes, others have told me, Independence should have dropped.

They blew a 13-point halftime lead. They allowed 41 points. They were outscored 27-7 after halftime.

We have six sportswriters voting in the poll. Five voted Butler No. 1; one stuck with Independence as No. 1.

Should the Patriots have fallen? Or dropped lower than No. 2?

What do you think? Post your thoughts by clicking on the comments link below.

Indy should have dropped in my opinion, they didn't play that well in Ohio, if you look back at the Byrnes scrimmage, they looked terrible then. Butler has clicked on all cylinders they should be ranked ahead of them

Your poll has been a joke for years. Your staff clearly doesn't know about 90 percent of the teams that play in your coverage area.

Catholic. Butler. Indy. Country Day. Latin. West Charlotte. Providence. AL Brown. Crest.

You afford all of those teams the luxury of losing games and barely being penalized for it. More than half your Sweet 16 could be picked every week, every year without even looking to see how those teams performed.

You're apologists.

If Hickory or Bandys or Concord or Clover loses, watch how far they'll fall. Heck, those teams don't even have to lose to fall in your poll.

Like I said, it's a joke. There's no purpose for the poll if there's a different grading system for different schools.

If Hopewell (2-0 with two dominating wins) went to Ohio and lost to a team not even ranked in the top 25 in the state, they wouldn't have a prayer of being in your top 25. And how about the teams over the state line, in S.C.

Northwestern took Country Day to four OTs. I guess that would put them slightly ahead of Catholic, right? Wrong. Not in your poll.

You guys are clueless. And the poll hurt your credibility as fair, unbiased reporters.

The poll is a fun way to stack up the teams and the writers at the observer know high school football better than anyone in the area. It's not a science. So relax.

That said, Butler deserves #1. They are the best team in the state--today, at least.

Have you seen Charlotte Weekly's poll? Now that's a joke! Butler at #3? Come on!

Dropping Big I in the Poll
actually is going to work in
their favor. Now they will get
back to the old Big I
football of blowing teams out!
Let Butler enjoy being #1 for
now. The question is how long
will their #1 ranking last?

First of all Indy played a very good game at the natti. I was at the game. The state of NC should be proud how they Represented. Their winning streak started Fri. Sept 1,2000 and ended Sat. Sept.1,2007 that was their destiny. The number 7 represents perfection and completion. This Indy loss will allow them to stay humble and remain grounded. NC is very well respected App.St in front of est.110,000 fans. Indy. in front of est.40,000 fans. They showed the country why they should be invited back to a challenge.Injury Rep. Carter, Pugh,Carruthers. This level of football will bring scouts to Meck. County. A Parent&Meck.Fan

The reason teams from Charlotte get treated better is because Charlotte is a vastly superior place to all that you mention. Even our worse people are inherently better than your best and brightest. If you are using Country Day as the litmus test to where a team should be ranked then you have to look at the fact that they had to come back against Catholic at home in a rivalry game versus trying to blow a game in Rock Hill against one of that state's premiere programs. But as much of a joke that the Sweet 16 might be, what is truly sad is that an adult gets so worked up over it. It's a Charlotte paper. If they have a bias to Charlotte schools take your concern up with the sports desk in Clover or Hickory or wherever, and perhaps they will posses the kind of journalistic integrity that is needed to rank high school football teams.

A note to all concerned: Butler Football is not concerned with polls and does not care about them. They are just opinions of the few. We strap it up every week
And try to do our best in playing sound football. We are not there yet, still have work to do. We owe our best efforts to our teammates, parents, coaches and our fans.
We respect every opponent and will not under estimate them or over estimate them. Some of you give too much credence to these polls…….relax and enjoy some High School Football.

The poll is based on objective and subjective criteria, but mainly subjective/opinion. It's a poll, who cares. It's nice to see Butler at #1 for a change, but does it really matter from week to week. The poll just generates a lot of discussion and bragging rights. Ther has always been smack-talk between Butler and Indy, but it is all in good fun. This year's smack is really flying early in the season. Can't wait for Nov. 2nd.

Out of state, Out of conference, Let's be a little realistic. Your Voters deep down inside were waiting at the chance to put a number 2 besides Indy. It's okay just throw fuel on the knott's fire and see how big it will blow up. I feel sorry for West Charlotte friday night....lol

INDEPENDENCE SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN DROPPED IN THE SWEET 16. UNTIL THEY ARE BEAT BY A NORTH CAROLINA TEAM. THEY ARE STILL #1. I DONT EVEN THINK LAST WEEKS GAME SHOULD HAVE COUNTED AGAINST THE STREAK. THEY SHOULD'NT HAVE EVEN PLAYED THAT GAME. THOSE PLAYERS DID NOT NEED THE PRESSURE OF PLAYING OUT OF STATE IN A STADIUM PACKED WITH 35000 FANS SCREAMING FOR THE OTHER TEAM. BUT REGARDLESS OF WHAT HAPPENED LAST WEEK, INDEPENDENCE IS STILL NUMBER ONE IN CHARLOTTE MECK, AND IN NORTH CAROLINA UNTIL SOMEBODY FROM THIS STATE BEATS THEM. SO BUTLER FANS YOU ARE STILL NUMBER 2 AND DONT FORGET IT.

I agree with that last comment. Indy still hasn't been beat by an NC team. I traveled a long way to see the game (I'm from out of the country), and it was a joke. Elder cheated. They had someone behind our bench calling all of our plays over to thier bench before we even got on the field. The refs had to have been paid off. The touchdown at the end that was completely out of bounds and everyone saw it, to all the rediculous calls like defencive holding...what is that??? I would love to see Elder get on a plain, have a 4 hour lay-over in Atlanta with only half of their team. Then take a bus to the field for a 2 1/2 hour practice. Sleep in a hotel then come to a stadium with 35,000 screaming Indy fans. Then you can deside if Indy needs to drop in the Sweet 16.

You Indy supporters sound like a bunch of babies. Take your lose like a man. No one forced you to play in Ohio, it's your egos that are out of line. I will not be surprised if a number of NC teams kick you a--. Maybe it will help you all come down to earth.

THIS MESSAGE IS TO THE LAST COMMENT THAT WAS POSTED, "UP YOURS BUDDY".... YOU MUST BE ONE OF THOSE BUTLER FANS THAT HAS BEEN HOPING TO BEAT INDY FOR THE LAST SEVEN YEARS. DID YOU SEE WHAT INDY DID TO WEST CHARLOTTE FRIDAY NIGHT? THE PATRIOTS ARE HUNGRY NOW, AND THERE GONNA HAVE SOME BULLDOG ON NOVEMBER 2ND.

Yes I saw, West Charlotte lost but they scored a pretty good amount of points on them, even without last years running back. Where is he again?

Anonymous said...

Yes - with no common opponent when you loose a game you should drop in rankings. Teams without a loss should be move up based on scores of games, showing strength of team in games played.

It appears Independence is ranked in the sweet sixteen based on last years team. Did any one on the team graduate? New team this year (very good team) but when you loose a game, you go to the back of the line. They may respond and win another title, but, for now the unbeaten teams deserve their earned position based on winning this year (not what happened last year with other players).
